Chapter Six
Max was on his way to the school when his phone rang. He looked around to make sure there weren’t any cops in the area before reaching for his cell. “What’s up?” he asked as soon as he hit the speaker option.
“As usual, you’re late,” Jinks said. “But it doesn’t matter anyway because I changed my mind.”
“Again?” Max had made two previous attempts to walk Jinks through the school, but his best friend had made excuses both times. “Jinks, man, you’re gonna have to face it sooner or later. School starts Monday.”
“Yeah, well, I guess I’ll worry about it Monday then,” Jinks replied.
“I’m almost there. Just wait for me,” Max urged.
“Can’t. There’s something I need to do. I’ll call ya later.” Jinks ended the call before Max could reply.
Max jabbed the End button. He knew where Jinks was going and considered heading him off, but he thought maybe it’d be better to talk to his dad first. It didn’t make sense to him why Jinks would try to hide where he’d been the last few days, but the abrasions he saw on Jinks the previous evening told him all he’d needed to know.
There was no sign of Jinks when he arrived at the school, but that didn’t surprise him. “Hell,” he sighed when spotted reporters stopping kids as they left the building. “Fucking vultures.”
Max jumped out of his Jeep and stalked toward the parasites who had made his dad’s life hell in the past few months. He was sick of the way the press kept bringing the shooting up. How were people supposed to heal if the rest of America kept scratching at their open wounds?
He tried his best to sidestep the cameras and reporters, but one unlucky sonofabitch actually grabbed his arm in an attempt to stop him.
“Would you like to share your thoughts with us?” the man asked.
Max jerked his arm out of the reporter’s grasp. He was about to tell the guy no comment when he changed his mind. “Sure,” he replied.
“Is this the first time you’ve been back to the school since the shooting?” the reporter asked before shoving the microphone in Max’s face.
“No,” Max answered. “Now, I have some questions for you. How many students, parents and teachers do you all have to interview before you leave us the hell alone? How many teenagers do you need to badger until they cry so you can get a soundbite for the evening news? Each time you show up here or bully someone over the phone for an interview, you’re hurting the very people you claim to care about. I’m done with this. I’m calling bullshit on any newspaper, radio or television station that continues to drag this story out because we’re not stupid. We know all you care about is ratings. Leave us the fuck alone!”
By the time Max had finished, he had every camera in the area on him. “Fuck all of you!” he yelled before throwing open the door to the school. He stalked to the office without meeting anyone else’s gaze.
